December 2012

Maithri thanks the Employees of Air link International DIC branch, Rashmi, Roshan Chandi and Monish Saini of Dubai for sponsoring the "TMS Online Academy" membership. This Online Academy is an excellent platform for learning Mathematics formulated specifically for classes X and XII students. Thanks to Rashmi, Roshan Chandi, and Monish Saini of Dubai for this wonderful gesture that aided the students in understanding the various mathematical concepts with ease.

Students from classes I - XI were invited to recite "Thirukkural" - rhyming Tamil couplets authored by the famous poet, Thiruvalluvar. 30 students took part and rendered these couplets with great enthusiasm. The students, young and old recited these couplets in a natural manner. Mr. R. Govindarjan, M.A., M.Ed., and Mr. Kuzhanthavelu, M.A., B.Ed., teachers in Government schools, Chennai and who are visually impaired served as judges for this competition. Mr. Subramaniam had a power point presentation of the various couplets recited by the students. The winners of this competition will be awarded their prizes on Thiruvalluvar Day, in the month of January, 2013. All the students received a certificate for participation. Maithri Trustee, Dr. Shobana Sundaram, who was visiting us from U.S.A., took part in this event.

November 2012

4th November, Maithri founder/trustee Shreedhar's birthday was celebrated in an affectionate and grand manner with the students. Celebration included birthday cakes, students sharing their personal experiences with Maithri and its founder and Sri and Srimathi Sampath rendering Vedic hymns, long-term associates, Subramaniyam, Thiagarajan, Balaji, and Saravanan shared their thoughts and experiences with Maithri. Many of the students and speakers turned emotional while talking about Mr. Shreedhar and sharing their experiences with him. All the students assured of their participation in Maithri activities in the future as well. In the evening students from S.V.V. Higher Secondary School, Vurapakkam, (near Chingleput) sang two hours of Bhajans and Maithri contributed the sum of Rs. 5000/-towards education to the school and presented mementos to all the children. Food was served both morning and evening hours to all students and their parents. November is the month of festival of lights: Deepavali was celebrated on 13th and Children's day was celebrated on 14th November. Maithri as usual, distributed dress, dress materials, crackers and sweets to the students and children this year as well.

October 2012

Birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi (Gandhiji), the Father of the nation was celebrated on 2nd October by Maithri. A MBA final semester student, Prabhu recalled Gandhiji's simple living and adherence to honesty and truthfulness. Ramachandran, a primary school student spoke about life of Gandhiji with his own sketches and drawings. The small function ended with prayers for world peace and non-violence

On 27th of this month, Maithri took part an inspiring talk and CD release function on Lord Ayyappa. Maithri was invited to this function by one of the foremost NGOs of India, Amar Seva Sangam, Aiyakudi, (near Tenkasi), Tamilnadu.

September 2012

The birthday of Sir Radhakrishnan has been celebrated as "Teachers' Day" every year by Maithri and this tradition was continued this year as well. Students met and spoke about Dr. Radhakrishnan and merits of learning and teaching.

Maithri has opened another tuition centre in Pammal, outskirts of Chennai city, to help students who require additional tutoring to normal school hours. Three hours of coaching has been offered to Maithri sponsored Anakaputhur Government Higher Secondary School students. The tuition classes are conducted every Sunday from 10 am onwards and 10 to 15 students take advantage of these coaching classes. This project has been run as part of Maithri Rural Education programme by Mr. Govindarajan, a visually-challenged and long time friend of Maithri, who had availed of Maithri's tutelage during his post-graduation years. He is working as a History teacher in the same secondary school and has been picking students particularly, girl students who need special attention and also, community-minded teachers as tutors.

August 2012

Independence Day was celebrated in the morning of 15th August in the tuition centre by students with pledge and prayers for Peace and Harmony and sweets were distributed.

The Founder Trustee Mr. R. Shreedhar, along with 4 students and volunteer visited Kalanjiyum trust in the outskirts of Chennai city to provide educational sponsorship to 21 students for the 6th year in succession under the "Rural Education for the Needy" scheme. All the students were given an opportunity to speak about their experiences and to interact with fellow students who, came in large numbers from all the local schools.

July 2012

In July, Maithri wants to share the happy news of one of our students Bhakyalakshmi, who has finished her B.Com graduation, got employed as 'System Account Trainee' in a reputed company in Chennai. Another student of Maithri, Dhanyalakshmi who is doing her final year B. Tech, has been provided with a Laptop for her collegiate work. This was made possible by Mr. Sridhar and his wife Mrs. Swetha, Maithri would like to thank them for their generous support.

The tuition center has resumed their coaching for students and they eagerly flock to the centre, every evening to be guided by senior students of Maithri.

June 2012

On 9th June, Maithri welcomed Mr. Santiago Sauquet, Jordi Broca and Mr. Oriol Permanyer from MarcSauquet Foundation, Spain. They were impressed with the interaction they had with the students of Maithri; few of the last year students were asked about their wishes and opportunities and wished the new comers. They were happy to continue their support for the forthcoming years.

Maithri tuition centre received a good response from the parents of the tuition students. The parents were happy with the way the senior students teach and devote their early morning and evening times and pleased with the students' performance in the recent board and public exams. Maithri is currently providing space to cope with the current needs and demands for the tuition center that is cramped and crowded. Any broadminded, generous donor who can provide space for this activity will be greatly welcomed and appreciated.

May 2012

On 4th May, a meeting was held with all the students who played a major role in the annual function held on 29th April. Maithri student RAMYA and her mother GOWRI were given memento and appreciation for taking good care of the visitors and food. For the forthcoming academic year, the final year, graduating students expressed their wish to help the fellow-Maithri students by tutoring them in their free time not only with academics but also in physical exercises, yoga and outdoor games.

On Saturday, May 22, heavy inflow of students to fill applications and getting fees for the year 2012-13. All the students coming from outskirts of Chennai were paid fees particularly, Sri Ramana Vidyalaya, Chrompet and Sri Ramakrishna Higher Secondary school, Tambaram, got their fees, notebooks, pencils and pens as gifts. Specifically a historic amount of Rs. 2.6 lakhs (260,000) were given away in the form of fees on a single day. Hand care international, Canada, agreed to extend their support for one more academic year for 44 Maithri students.

On May 25th, as part of community welfare scheme, a syntax water tank was installed and formally made available for the suffering residents of Pallikarannai (outskirts of Chennai) by Maithri. Maithri with the help of generous donors provided the syntax tank for storage so that the resident can access drinking water. The donation was made in honor of the parents of the Founder Trustee, Mr. Shreedhar Rajaram and inaugurated by Ms. Banu, a longtime associate and local social activist of the Trust on June 1st.

April 2012

21st Anniversary function of Maithri Trust was held at Panigraha Kalayana Mandapam, Chennai-33 on 29th April 2012. The competitive events including music, drawing, lexicon, and spell-bee were held the day before (28th April). Over 200 students participated in the competitive events; students from I grade to XII grade participated in the events. All participants were provided with participation certificate on the same day. The winners were announced in the evening and the prizes were distributed the next day during the anniversary function. Maithri Alumni, Roopesh Kumar who is currently working in Pune made a donation to Maithri from his first salary. Maithri appreciates his gesture and his interest for continued support for Maithri children who could benefit like he did.

The Anniversary function was designed and executed by the students of Maithri Trust, first of its kind where directions were given by founder, Mr. Shreedhar to the kids and arrangements were done by the students. Songs, dances, skits and acrobatics were presented by the students.

The chief guest for the event Mr. A. Ravichandran, Regional Director, AID India, gave away the gift vouchers to the academically excelled student of the past year. Mr. Balajikrishna (X std) and Aishwarya (XII std).

Others prizes given were best singer-vocal (junior) to Karan, vocal (senior) to Shreya Sundaraman, best drawing (junior) to Karan and spell-bee (junior) to Harshan. Mr. M.R. Venkatesh and Mr. B. Shantanu (ex-IFS officer) graced the occasion and distributed prizes, certificates and mementos. All longtime donors were honored with a memento and they reciprocated with their good wishes and appreciation for students in their speech. The commitment and passion exhibited by the students for the competition and event was fabulous and that made this event a grand success.

Maithri Alumni, Roopesh Kumar who is currently working in Pune made a donation to Maithri from his first salary. Maithri appreciates his gesture and his interest for continued support for Maithri children who could benefit like he did.

On 13th, Maithri Founder, Shreedhar, was invited by the Rotary Club of Velachery, Chennai to give a talk on how he overcame his disabilities caused by Polio(poliomyelitis) and how he is leading a successful and meaningful life. The gathered Rotarians applauded his positive attitude and contributing to the community inspite of his disabilities. Initiated by Rtn. Subramanian, members made spontaneous donations to Maithri Educational and Charitable Trust.

Students and Trustees of Maithri decided to celebrate Maithri's 21st Annual year celebration on Sunday 29th April, 2012. Prior to the big day, Inter-school competitions like music, drawing, chess, spelling-bee, Sudoku and various other games will be conducted on 28th April.

February 2012

The month began with the donation of a desktop computer system with full accessories by Ms. Lavanya Ananth of Chennai to Maithri Engineering student, Krishnakumar for his class and project work.

On 18th, Shreedhar was invited to be the chief Guest in the annual program of the NGO, ARUWEE. He presented certificates to city college students who excelled in social work done individually or part of their institution.

Two Maithri students accompanied Shreedhar for this program. On 26th, Maithri took 15 students to a village near Chingelpet, 60 Kilometers from the Chennai for an outing to relax and energize before their final examinations. The trip was filled with fun and frolic and was sponsored by a donor who wants to remain unidentified. A big "Thanks" to you Madam.

This month ended with a sad note: Maithri student Ramkumar lost his mother in a road accident. Maithri trustees and students visited the family and conveyed their heart-felt condolences.

January 2012

On 8th January, the spoken English class had a discussion on "arranged vs. love marriages". The students took part with great enthusiasm. Prabhu, a long-term Maithri student was chosen to be as the best in expressions and Mrs. Rajalakshmi appreciated the efforts of the students.

On 14th January, the Pongal festival was celebrated merrily by Maithri students by wearing new dress and an outing to Besant Nagar Beach.

This month was filled with laurels and glory for Maithri sponsored students. Manimoorthy, second year engineering student of Anna University bagged number of medals and certificates (won first and second place in various sporting events) in the Para Olympics held for city colleges. Roopeshkumar who completed engineering degree was selected by an established software company and is currently posted in Pune, Maharashtra. Bhavana Sharma is the topper of the eleventh standard in the school (R K M Girls SSS) and bagged a cash award. Mr. Raghunath donated a desktop computer to Sunitha, Maithri student who is currently doing her Bio-tech degree. Maithri appreciates Mr. Raghunath and family for this kind gesture.

Lister Technologies Foundation donated Rs 50,000/- to promote "micro financing" for senior students and parents in developing small business as "self-help Groups" and enabling the borrowed money to be returned in easy installments. Maithri educational and charitable trust had been doing this "micro-financing" with last years' donation from the foundation and has proved the venture to be welcoming and of "great success". Happy with this success story, Mr. Srinivasa Gopalan, director and his team continued their interest this year as well. Maithri educational and charitable trust thanks the Foundation for the continued patronage.

On 28th January, Mr. Shreedhar and two of Maithri's college-going students visited the book stall put by another NGO ('Amar Seva Sangam') as part of the Fair in D.G. Vaishnava Collage in Chennai and met with the Secretary, Mr. Sankara Raman. Further, they had visited St. Louis Institute for the Deaf and Blind, Adyar, Chennai to monitor the progress of Venkatesh (Maithri student) who is the hostel-resident of the Institute and also met with his teacher and the principal.
