December 2015

A special report on Maithri's relief and rehabilitation activities along with the following Organizations and individuals' contributions:

  • Maithri thanks these Organizations and individuals who have confidence in Maithri and worked along with us at the moment of crisis and time of need.
  • Mr. Subramaniam of Rotary Club of Chennai, Velachery, Ms. Bhanu of Pallikaranai, Chennai and many others who made our might in helping Chennai to come out from this unexpected calamity.

Here we enclose some pictures that may not be clear due to poor lighting, weather permitted and limited.

Food packets distributed at the time of need and weeks followed. Thanks to Mr.Subramaniam who was on the ground and took extra efforts in distributing them personally.

Basic materials like notebooks, sarees, dress materials, counselling to students and parents. Replacing lost books, photo copying notes given by the institutions.

One Lakh (hundred thousand) and eight thousand worth of medicines were given to PUBLIC HEALTH CENTRE, WEST MAMBALAM, CHENNAI 600033. PHC, a NGO with well-endowed infrastructure, provides health care for economically weak free of cost while catering to the needs of mid & lower middle class segments. During the floods, water had risen up to almost 5 ft. inside the premises inflicting severe damage to their pharmacy stocks, medical equipment. Luckily, foresight saw them evacuate in patients on time. Amazing fact is they reopened within ten days of the disaster.

Ten students of Maithri trust who lost all belongings were provided with basic things like kitchen utensils, bed sheets and clothes.

Still the work is going on in rehabilitation areas in rebuilding roofs, helping the parents of the students in getting back to work, helping them in auto rickshaw repairs, getting their business back in running by helping in financial investments, etc.,

November 2015

The 69th birthday of Mr. Shreedhar, founder-trustee was celebrated with more than 75 students and their parents. Mr.Chandrasekar of SAAMA engineering Pvt. Ltd,, Mr. Narasimhan., Mrs & Mr. Balasubramanian attended this event. Apart from Trustee Sowmya Simhan, Trustee's sister, brother and sister-in-law participated in this celebration. Trustee's sister recalled Shreedhar's early days and all applauded her. All had a nice lunch and special mention to the students who presented 69 gifts to mark his age amidst cheers, Happy birthday song and birthday cake.

On Nov 8th, 15 MAITHRI students were invited for Deepavali celebrations by Rotary club of Velachery to Madras Race club grounds. They had wonderful time till night with food and snacks. New dresses were gifted to students and sarees to mothers. All participants: students, volunteers and founder trustee enjoyed the event and express their special thanks to Rtn. Subramanyam (Subbu) of RC, Velachery.

"We proudly thank Mr. Sridhar, Founder of Maithri Educational & Charitable Trust who supplied nearly 250 food packets and 250 water bottles for distribution via the rescue team for victims in T.Nagar, Ramnagar, Perumbakkam on 16th and 17th Nov. October 2015

From Oct 3 to Oct 10, students celebrated "Navaratri" by setting up (arranged) row of dolls, science park and maths show were noted features.

MAITHRI jointly with FOOD BANK headed by Ms. Sneha Mohandas catered food and provided blankets for the shelter-less, homeless people who are sometimes ran over by aimless driving by late night. Food during the day was distributed in heavy rains. MAITHRI volunteers started their participation by Founder trustee himself distributed the food packets.

D.Gomathi received Rs 1500/- as cash award from the Chief Minister Jayalalitha cash award for the best student in each subject in the Corporation Schools. She is the topper in the Science group.

Arsheen Mooja, a graduate from Chennai Fashion Technology, does an important service by helping students who cannot afford shoes, which is a requirement in many schools. She provides them shoes free of cost from donations received from her philanthropic friends. She gave a pair to MAITHRI student SHAKTIVEL who is in the 12th grade.

Maithri trust has given three sewing machines to rural rehabilitation centre, Tamilnadu (border of Kerala state) for women below poverty line to earn a livelihood.

September 2015

On Teachers' day, Sep 5th, students in small groups visited Founder trustee's home to show their respect and to thank him for educating them. They expressed their reverence by offering him with a garland of sandalwood and sweets.

This month also includes a day where students exhibited their oratorical talent by selecting a topic and making short speeches. Students want to reserve a day every month to discuss social causes. For September they selected "Clean India". Ten students spoke on this topic and MAITHRI trustees noted the best speaker and the student will be awarded on a special Trust Day.

August 2015

Early this month, as a mark of respect and love to the departed leader, Dr. APJ Kalam who collapsed lecturing students on July 27, Maithri and Maithri students conducted a memorial. The students talked about Dr. APJ's inspirational words and works and pledged to celebrate his works and plant a tree every year.

On the occasion of India's Independence day (Aug 15th), students of Maithri spoke about some of the great leaders who fought for Independence and exchanged greetings and sweets.

July 2015

Early July, former student and a patron of Maithri, Krishnakumar was honored as the champion against use of plastics. He conducted an awareness event in a crowded city mall by teaching some intricate and easy and interesting dance moves that were emulated by very many youngsters in the mall.

On 25th July, Maithri visited Kalanjyium trust in the suburbs of Chennai city. In this seventh year visit Maithri's founder trustee M. Shreedhar along with current students took part in the annual function It was held in the headquarters of the Kalanjyium trust and 26 students were given cheques and many of the speakers spoke on the commitment towards school-education and treating the school properties responsibly.

Office bearers of Jana Seva, a NGO from New York met with students and their parents to note the progress.

June 2015

On 5th June, Maithri and students received the office bearers and members of Mark Saquath Foundation for their annual visit.

On 12th June, Maithri visited Sri Ramana Vidyalaya HSS and Sri Ramakrishna HSS in Tambaram and handed over cheques to 23 students. The sponsors, Praveen and Raj are two young businessmen who believe in education to be the path for progress.

On 21st June, a donor who prefers to be anonymous, paid the entire semester fees for an engineering student, who comes from economically weaker section of the society and whose father works as an auto-rickshaw driver.

May 2015

On 7th May, we had the 12th (Plus 2) exam results of Tamil Nadu and Maithri is happy in sharing the success story with you all. Out of 22 students who appeared for exams, all of them passed with excellent marks. The topper, N. Kiruthika with 1151/1200 followed by Ramya 1114/1200, N.S.Vigneshkumar 1113/1200 and D.Gomathi 1088/1200. Most of them opted for Commerce and others for Engineering.

On 21st of May we had our Tamil Nadu State Board: 10th Board Examination results. Out of 24 students who appeared for the exams, all of them passed with M.Swetha scoring the 488/500 followed by S.Vignesh with 472/500. All the 24 students got their desired main group for their higher studies.

With great sense of pride, joy and satisfaction, Maithri Congratulates all the students for their hard work despite their challenging domestic environment and THANKS all the Sponsors for making this feat possible.

From mid-May, parents and guardians of students sought tuition fees and books by producing necessary documents for the next academic year (June 2015- April 2016)

From 20th May, Lister foundation Chennai. started sponsoring students domiciled outside Chennai through Maithri. Two college going students and two school going students in Srivilliputhur and Mailaduthurai respectively. This has provided opportunity for Maithri to help students in the interior Tamilnadu. Following this, SAAMAS, an Engineering Company sponsored two students from Pudhucerry (Pondicherry). This is first time Maithri had provided out of state sponsorship.

April 2015

Attires were sponsored by a patron for all students and volunteers (ex-students). For the sake of uniformity, the boys received t-shirt and girls received churidaar tops of same color.

On 25th April, Nepal was hit by severe earthquake that killed more than 8,000 people and injured more than 19,000. Within a week of the calamity, bedsheets, medicines, skin ointments, candles and clothes were collected and sent through NGOs: Goonj and Ennangalin Sangamam and relief articles were air-lifted to affected areas.

March 2015

As always, Maithri conducted mock exams for X and XII students and also conducted a special prayer session on students' request in Panigraha kalyana mandapam on march 28, 2015. This was attended by all X, XI, XII students along with their parents. Maithri provided food and small souvenirs.

February 2015

Maithri would like to extend their special thanks to HCI, Canada (partial support for 44 students), Marc Saquet Foundation, Spain (full support for 26 students), Prasannan Krishnasharma/Jana Seva (partial support for 100 students). Donations from individuals have increased the corpus. SAMMA Engineering Corp. provided all stationery items for the Trust. Additionally, they have sponsored 50% aid for an engineering student in SASTRA college and have extended commitment to support 50% till the students' completion of the degree. They are willing to provide professional guidance to newly graduated engineering students.

January 2015

Maithri wishes A Very Happy New Year to one and all.

In the annals of Maithri Trust for the very first time, 100 students were sponsored by HCI, Canada with aid of Rs. 5000 each in a single day. 98 of those students obtained their money through bank transactions and only 2 have been issued check. So the total number of students in Maithri has risen to about 350. A good start in the New Year!

On 6th Jan, Maithri representative presented a cheque (over Rs.140,000) and sponsored 5 needy students from St. Antoney Higher Secondary school, Velachery. Chennai. On the third Saturday, Maithri participated in the blood donation camp organized by rotary club, Velachery held at St. Antoney's school.

On 25th Jan, HCI, Canada had invited all HCI sponsored NGOs for a meeting on in Chennai to discuss about future projects and congratulated Maithri for the swift action taken in reaching out to the 100 students.
