December 2010

Maithri thanks Handicare International, Canada and Marks Saquat Foundation, Spain for continuing their support by extending funds for this academic year 2010-2011. Maithri continues its weekly spoken English/personality development classes on Sundays. We could see positive improvements in our students; in their approach to the challenging campus interviews and few have gained placements- Shyamala, Ropeshkumar, Kalaivani, Uma Maheshwari and Manojkumar. Campus interviews are continuing and we hope to see more success. Maithri not only provides educational assistance also, takes care of the students' health with medical camps and health check-ups. Recently G.K. Aishwarya had major surgery in her neck and is recovering from stiff neck and neurological issues that have been cleared with help of Dr.Geetha Arjun. Dr. Arjun had facilitated free-of-cost surgery for Aishwarya in Sundaram Medical Hospital and Maithri bore the charges for the medicines. Maithri thanks Deewan Foundation, U.K. in helping Venkatesh who is hearing-impaired by getting a pair of German made hearing aid that costs Rs 19,500/-. Venkatesh studies in a city based Deaf and Dumb school with slow-learning children.

November 2010

The month of November was a busy one with chock-full of activities. On 4th of November, the founder, Shreedhar's birthday was celebrated by students in a festive manner. 30 students along with, very many ardent patrons of Maithri, took part and a birthday cake was cut. Each and every student talked about their experiences and highlighted how their association with Shreedhar and Maithri had transformed their lives. Students showered gifts, poems on Mr. Shreedhar and many pledged to give back to 'Maithri' so that many more students can avail of Maithri's support. (pics)

On 5th of November, 'Deepavalli' was celebrated with students wearing new dresses and fire-crackers were burst. Thanks again to 'M/s Kumaran Silk, Kumaran Creations', T. Nagar and Ms. Manju (see Oct NEWS & pics).

On 16th of November, Shreedhar received "DR BATRA's POSITIVE HEALTH AWARD" in Chowdiah Hall, Bengaluru (Bangalore). The award constituted a trophy and certificate of appreciation for the contribution to the society despite their physical limitations. The chief guest, Bollywood actress Vidya Balan presented the award in the presence of Dr Batra and Mr. Rajesh Bajaj (pics). Interviews to the media and dailies were prevalent in November. The New Indian Express, Mambalam Times, T.Nagar Times published articles on the founder.

October 2010

This month an article on the Founder/Trustee of Maithri appeared in the monthly magazine "Frozen Thoughts" and was greatly appreciated by many. (See scanned article)

Gandhi Jayanthi (Oct. 2) was celebrated in great fervor by Maithri students. A Quiz on the Father of the Nation, Gandhiji was devised by Ms. Swetha and conducted along with Ms. Shyamala (Maithri student) and the student participants responded actively and knowledgably. The best student received a prize - a book on Gandhiji and young students drew pictures of the Mahatma and his life. (See pictures below)

In the second half of this month Maithri, as every year, distributed new dresses/dress materials to the students. Special thanks to 'Kumaran Silk, Kumaran Creations', T. Nagar, for providing all the dresses/dress materials and Ms. Manju for coordinating the event. Maithri classroom was moved to a new location (to Periyar Road from Sarangapani St.,T. Nagar). Thanks to Mr. Radhakrishnan for installing the computers in the new venue and Mr. Ranganathan for capturing these events in stellar photographs and posting them on Facebook.

September 2010

Maithri celebrated "Teacher's Day" on 6th of September. Students honored Mrs. Rajalakshmi and Mr. Subramanian by presenting shawls and also spoke on the valued guidance provided by the two. Further, each student delivered a small speech about Dr. Radhakrishnan, (whose birthday-5th Sep is celebrated as Teacher's Day) as a teacher and the first President of the Republic of India. The function ended with birthday cake being cut and relished by one and all. On the very same day, Maithri Shreedhar was invited as a guest speaker in the teacher's day celebration held in Queen Maris College hostel. Sanmarga Foundation Founder, Ms Sangamitra Amuda gave the introductory remarks and Shreedhar answered some of the inmate's questions.

On 24th Maithri's three months' training camp for sex workers came to an end. A valedictory function in Santhome Vigilance Home was conducted. The IAS Officer from the Department of Social Welfare Board Government Of Tamilnadu presided over the function and distributed the sheilds to all the trainers and certificates to the students. Ms. Reshma Sharma spear-headed this training camp and made it a huge success.

Early this month, Miss. Prema, daughter of a fisherman, who had obtained very good grades in her B.E.(Bachelor of Engineering) was selected for M.E. course. The request came from another NGO on behalf of Prema, to share a portion of her fees. Based on her financial and family condition, Maithri shared one third of her fees.

August 2010

On the first of August, 25 students along with the Founder Trustee of Maithri took part in CITIZENS' RUN (2010). All of them wore special T-shirts and ran the stretch along the Marina beach and arrived at the starting point: Lady Wellington College. Each and everyone who took part enjoyed this annual run for "the noble cause". (see pictures)

On 7th August, the Founder Trustee was invited to "The College Students and Graduates Association of the Blind" where, he was thanked for the services rendered to the Visually Impaired Students for the past 20 years. Reading and running an audio cassette library were some of the services offered.

On 15th August, Independence Day was celebrated by Maithri with National Flag Hoisting, students speech on "youth and independence" and distribution of sweets and other eatables.

On 21st August, nineteen girl students were offered special medical checkup by Dr. Geetha Arjun. Free medicines were offered for the students and three of them were called back to undergo special treatment. Maithri will be doing the follow up. Special thanks to ASEEMA TRUST for making all the arrangements.

Tameembabu, a college student has proved that he can "earn while learning". He was doing a part-time small business of supplying drinking water cans to residentential houses and set a trend that if you are ready to work, means and opportunities will present itself. MAITHRI provided him loan for investment for this business as part our "micro financing scheme". The scheme provides easy monthly return of the loan and MAITHRI has initiated loan for two promising students per year.

July 2010

Maithri thanks Sukrithi Social Foundation for placing three more computers in Maithri office for the students' benefits. Maithri also thanks Mr. Chandrasekar of SAMA Engineering Pvt. Ltd. for providing college text-books worth Rs. 10,000/-. We are indebted to Mr.Narasimhan who had been instrumental for this noble gesture. Mrs. Shobana Surjitkumar of California, USA celebrated her son's birthday by sending boxes with snacks and icecream for Maithri students on 18th July. On July 30, Maithri team (consisting of Mrs., Praveena, Reshma and Rajalakshmi with the Founder trustee) visited Kalanjyum Trust in the outskirts of Chennai and distributed this academic years' fees for 22 students under 'Rural Education Project' programme (pictures). Maithri congratulates Ms. Sowmya Simhan, founder of Sukrithi Social Foundation and one of Maithri trustee for getting the coveted Asendes BEST WOMAN SOCIAL WORKER 2010 award constituted by The Tamilnadu Federation of the Differentlyabled.

June 2010

We are pleased to welcome the successfully tenth-standard passed students by giving away prizes for the meritorious students. To prepare them for the forthcoming board exams, Senor students prepared mock-question papers to each one of the junior students and corrected the answer sheets. This was done in a real professional style by these interested students.

May 2010

Maithri is very pleased and happy that all 12th standard students passed with high marks and ready to go over to degree courses, Mr. Subramaniam, patron of Maithri, gave away cash prizes of Rs.500/- for M.Ganesh for scoring highest mark among our students and Rs.250/ for 6 other students with a "Tirukkural" book for each one. 60 students were paid fees this month, which is almost four times in number from what we paid in April 2009. 4 young students from Maithri took part in a summer camp and not only tasted success in studies but also in sports and games, fine arts, internet, and drama competitions with other students from various city schools.

April 2010

April normally, a pensive month for students - as they await their examination results/marks and graduation to next grade, but this year has turned out to be very different We had a big event on the 10th of this month - 'MAITHRI's DAY OUT.' Maithri students devised cultural programs with songs, dances, drama-skits etc.,. This was an informal function where the students took all the initiatives and Ms. Sangamitra Amudha, Mr. Raviraj Munusamy of Kalanjiyum trust and Mr.Shivakumar (Donor) participated with the parents, donors, well wishers, alumni of Maithri. About 30 students and staff from Kalanjiyum Trust from villages near Madhuranthagam district participated in this event.

Best Student Award (Boy) named after late Mr. S.Seshadri, an ardent supporter of Maithri from its early days and Best Student Award (Girl) named after Ms. Sita, a widow at her young age, helped other families by working as a cook until her late years (89) were initiated during this occasion. Keshav Prasad who scored high marks in the 12th grade and presently enrolled in ICWA and Aishwarya who scored high marks in her 10th grade were the recipients of these awards (a gift cheque valued for Rs.1000) (see pictures below).

Maithri thanks STATE BANK OF INDIA for sponsoring the gifts and food. Food was served in traditional south Indian style by Geetha Hotel staff and Maithri thanks Mr. Gopal, proprietor of Geetha Hotel for readily providing the sumptuous meal at reduced rates. Maithri also thanks Mrs.Shobana Surujit of California and Mr. Ashwin of Ashwetha restaurant for providing evening snacks in packed/portable containers. The event was a huge success and students and participants left the arena with full satisfaction.

Maithri, in anticipation, enrolled 23 students this month, from a steady flow of deserving students seeking financial support. This unprecedented inclusion even before the summer,is due to the growing pool of deserving students needing financial support.

March 2010

Maithri thanks Mr. G. Ravikumar of Hyderabad for donating school bags to students and these bags were distributed to most deserving students immediately. On 14th March, Maithri conducted a medical camp with Dr. Malathy Ramani, General Physician, in her own clinic. The camp was mainly targeted towards the girl students who were issued free health check-up and medicines with very good advice on their food and nutrition.

The 'Spoken English and Personality Development' classes that were initiated early this year grew in size and more than 30 students took part this month.

February 2010

On the 1st of Feb 2010, Maithri was invited by TRIAD SOFTWARE Pvt. Ltd., Chennai, to be the recipient of a donation of Rs.1,22,000 towards educational assistances for the academic year 2010-2011. TRIAD became aware of Maithri's work from their web-site (www.maithritrust.org) and after visiting Maithri's founder and evaluating Maithri, TRIAD made this benevolent gesture.

Maithri appreciates Mr. Rajaram, Mrs. Girija Rajaram and family for their novel method of charity by donating the value of the gifts received on the occasion of their daughter Sinduja's wedding held on 5th February 2010.

On Feb 13th, Maithri's Founder/Trustee Mr. Shreedhar was invited by ARUWEE (an organization catering towards home for destitute elders and deprived children) for their tenth anniversary program in Kamarajar Arangam, Chennai. Shreedhar was asked to give away Certificates for social work to students from various city colleges. Shreedhar was also requested to welcome the chief guest, cine-actor, Dhanush.

January 2010

Maithri began the year of 2010 by greeting donors, members and students.

Special thanks to Madam Principal, St. Marks School, Adyar, Chennai for her extraordinary gesture, donation of an excellent collection of story books in mint condition to Maithri. Maithri also thanks Mr. Subramanian for donating college text books to all our students from his book bank. He also gave away dictionaries, long notebooks and self and life-improvement books to our students.

Maithri has extended a unique and useful facility for students to learn 'Spoken English' and 'Personality Development' courses by conducting weekly class (on Sundays) from 10th January. Maithri gratefully thanks Mrs S.Rajalakshmi who, not only teaches for free but also provides space for conducting these classes (see pictures below).

Maithri would like to conclude the January news with a memoriam. We were deeply shocked by the sudden demise of an ardent patron and a wonderful person; Sri. Solai Sreerangam. May his soul rest in peace.
